Superbills

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt I provide after your session(s). It includes all the information your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network reimbursement claim — things like my credentials, service codes, fees, and your diagnosis (if applicable).

It can be helpful to call your insurance company to see if they allow reimbursement for superbills.

What should I ask my insurance company?

When talking to your insurance company, let them know you’re seeing an out-of-network mental health provider and you’d like to know if your sessions are eligible for reimbursement. It can be helpful to ask the following questions:

  1. Ask if your plan covers couples counseling, both in-network and out-of-network(Many plans do not cover couples therapy, so it’s best to confirm this ahead of time.

  2. Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?

  3. What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?'

  4. What is my deductible, and how much of it has been met?

  5. Is there a limit to the number of sessions per year?

  6. Do you require a specific diagnosis code for reimbursement?

  7. How do I submit a superbill or claim form (online portal, mail, etc.)?

  8. How long does reimbursement typically take?

How do I submit my superbill?

Once you have the answers above, you can usually submit your superbill through:

  • The insurance company’s online portal, or

  • Mail/email using their claim form (you can find this on their website).

After you complete your therapy sessions and pay the fee to your therapist, you can submit your claim to your insurance company and receive reimbursement for a portion or all of your session fee. The amount reimbursed is determined by your insurance company.

WHat should I expect after submitting my claim?

After submission, your insurance company will review the claim. If eligible, they’ll send reimbursement directly to you (not to me). Processing typically takes a few weeks.
